Debate Duo Returns from California

February 27, 2018

Lake Mary Preparatory School's Speech and Debate Team is growing stronger with each competition they attend. In order to enhance their experience with debaters and judges from other areas of the country, the LMP Speech and Debate Team compete in tournaments around the country in Kentucky, Chicago and Arizona. The team has just returned from a 10 day, 3 tournament excursion through the San Francisco Bay Area and it shows in the results. The Debate Duo of Andrew Huang and Albi Manfredi have truly developed into one of the top Public Forum debate teams in the country. Speech and Debate coach Bob Dolan states "It may be a cliché, but the phrase I would use to describe our California debate swing is 'Mission Accomplished'. "

Starting at Stanford University, the team compiled a 5-1 record in Prelims and advanced through the first elimination round before being upset in the next round. However, Albi was awarded the #2 individual speaker award and Andrew #5.

After a day off, the team spent the day in San Francisco with our fellow competitors (and friends) from Lake Highland Prep—but also spent time texting with the debaters from Stoneham Douglas as events were transpiring in South Florida. Thankfully, all those students and coaches were physically safe.

A day later the team moved up to Walnut Creek to an invitational Round Robin sponsored by College Prep Academy. The boys really shone here: with 2 judges for each debate they earned a 10-2 record with 4 full wins and 2 splits, including a split with the #1 ranked team in the country, Mission San Jose. Albi was named the #4 individual speaker and Andrew was #6.

For the final 3 days, the team was at UC Berkeley, where the one loss in prelims came to the NEW #1 team (Millburn, NJ who had just won the UPenn tournament the previous weekend)  and then in the Round of 16 to Presentation Academy of San Jose who eventually advanced to the finals.

Summary: 17th place out of 210 teams at Stanford, 2nd place at the Round Robin, and 9th place (of 277 teams) at UC Berkeley.

This weekend 7 members of the team will attempt to qualify for the NCFL National Tournament at the Grand Finals hosted by Timber Creek HS.
